From the lodge's patio, visitors may watch Elephants pad along the Monwana River bed in front of them, or have close encounters of the 'Rhino kind' on game walks through the bush. Other day-time sightings may include Zebras, Blue Wildebeest, Eland, Waterbuck, Bushbuck, Giraffes, Common Duiker, Kudu, Impala and Steenbok. At night you may chance upon Leopards or Spotted Genets. More than 300 species of bird have been listed at Thornybush, including Hornbill, African Hawk Eagle, Owl, Nightjar, Roller and Weaver.

Although Thornybush is one of South Africa's oldest game lodges, it changed hands in 1990 and has since then been extensively and lovingly refurbished. For the quality and style of its accommodation, it may be a more economical option than its luxurious sister lodges in the Timbavati area: Ngala, Tanda Tula and Motswari. The eighteen tastefully furnished thatched chalets and rondavels (with bathroom en suite) are set under a rich canopy of indigenous trees. There are also two family suites with their own private plunge pools. A cosy bar, dining room and spacious lounge lead on to a patio and swimming pool. Depending on the weather, dinner may be served along a crackling log fire in the boma nearby. Unique incentive options including the 'Thornybush Challenge' are highly recommended and a fully equipped conference facility (60 delegates) is also available.
