It's hard to believe that this haven of grace is right in the heart of the busy cosmopolitan city of Durban, with extensive entertainment, commercial, sports, tourist and transport facilities all around it. The Royal is also within walking distance of Africa's leading convention facility, the International Convention Centre (ICC). The ICC is fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology and is capable of hosting a wide variety of events. Like The Royal the ICC was founded on world class standards of hospitality and service.

The Royal Hotel Attractions |
Breathtaking panoramic views of Durban add to the overall ambience of the decor. Your adjoining bathroom is the height of luxury. And, as you'd expect, the two penthouses are beautifully appointed.
Hospitality at The Royal goes back a long way, to the early 1840s when a sea captain supplying the British garrison sensed the port of Durban's commercial promise and bought the land upon which The Royal stands today.
Opened as Durban's first hostelry in 1845, the building was originally a low-thatched wattle - and - daub building called the Commercial Hotel, a name that changed to The Masonic in 1852.
In the years that followed the hotel became the centre of the town's rapidly growing community life and, following a Royal Appointment granted by Queen Victoria's second son, Prince Alfred, the hotel became known as The Royal in 1860.

The Royal Hotel Facilities |
With the new "Royal Blue" look having been implemented throughout the Hotel, one will find the Royal's rooms luxuriously appointed in yellowwood and graciously complemented by rich, sophisticated colour schemes, hence creating a harmonious contrast with the dark woods and the cream tones. Tea and Coffee facilities have also been introduced, re-enforcing our goal to ensure a convenient stay for all.
All in all, the hotel contains some 204 bedrooms (including 2 paraplegic rooms) and 16 suites, which either overlook the Point Yacht Club and Bay or the gracious City Hall.
The Royal also provides a floor of accommodation for those women travelling alone, as well as non-smoking floors.
With six unique restaurants and a choice of three upmarket cocktail venues, The Royal offers something for every taste - from the casual to the superlative. Together, The Royal's dining venues offer dining of an international standard, from classic cuisine to creative light meals.
