Plettenberg Bay was first spotted in 1488 by Bartholomew Diaz, a portuguese sailor. 90 years later Manuel da Perestrello aptly called it Bahia Formosa or the Bay Beautiful. In 1779, The Governor of the Cape, Baron von Plettenberg, renamed the town Plettenberg Bay.
