The Cellars Hohenort Hotel Attractions
In its renaissance as one of the great country house hotels of the Cape, the five-star Cellars-Hohenort is a member of the international Relais & Chateaux Association With its understated luxury, antique furnishings and original works of art, the hotel is a celebration of traditional values and gracious living. An avid and knowledgeable gardener Liz Mc Grath's exquisite gardens at The Cellars-Hohenort are acknowledged as one of the finest hotel gardens internationally. Recently voted by Garden Design a top American magazine as one of the top 30 hotel gardens in the world. An example of her interest is her recent discovery of 8 camphor trees in the grounds. No one was aware that they were there because they were being obscured by indigenous plants which had sprung up and were growing in profusion around their base camouflaging an important piece of Cape history. This was soon rectified and the drama and history of the trees restored. According to Professor Wim Tuimens of Stellenbosch University, the trees were brought out from Japan by the Dutch East India Company and were planted in 1690 beside the road that came out from the Castle to Constantia, where vegetables and grapes were planted to extend the Company's gardens. With urban development, most of these ancient trees have disappeared. There are still the odd one or two in the green belt of Constantia and those at the Cellars - in her own words "it is wonderful to have the 8 trees preserved in the gardens exactly as they were planted all those years ago". They are lovingly cared for and Liz Mc Grath has applied to the National Monuments Board to have them declared a National Monument for posterity. Nooks, crannies and exquisite features abound. Jean Almon and her team of dedicated gardeners tend and create with genuine love and flair.
