OVERBERG
- GENERAL INFORMATION |
Over the Helderberg Mountains which isolate the Cape
Peninsula and Winelands areas of the Cape, you will
find the area referred to as the Cape Overberg.
This scenic wheat growing region is traversed by the
N2 national road from Cape Town. A striking backdrop
of mountain ranges flank the route to the interior
and towards the south a large undulating plateau stretches
to the coast.
Historic towns with a wealth of architectural heritage
dot the route. Swellendam, the third oldest town in
South Africa is definitely worth a visit.
Cape Agulhas is the true southern tip of Africa. Here
you can witness the meeting point of the Atlantic
and Indian Oceans, a fascinating, isolated stretch
of stony coastline.

|
|
Along the coast you may chance cage diving with Great White
Sharks. The decision is, do you find it ethical and what
effect is this form of sensational adventure having on the
shark’s habits.
Are the sharks becoming too habituated with the human contact
and chumming? Shark attacks are on their increase. Until
proven otherwise it would be better to find your adrenaline
rushes elsewhere.
The entire coastline is full of whales from August to November.
Southern Right Whales visit the coast every year to mate
and calve. Hot spots for excellent sightings are Hermanus,
De Hoop Nature Reserve and Breede River Mouth.
