LITTLE
KAROO CLIMATE |
The
rain, conveyed by the humid sea breeze, descends over
the weather side of the mountain, with the lee side
remaining relatively dry.
The Karoo, which falls within the summer rainfall
area, gets as little as 400 mm of rain per year. The
winter months are usually dry.
Due to the average altitude of 1200 m on the central
high-plateau, temperatures in summer are usually
bearable, although the thermometer reading can sometimes
go over 35 degrees Celsius.

KAROO - GENERAL INFORMATION |
Oudtshoorn is only an hour's drive from the Cape
south coast. The "ostrich feather capital of
the world”,during Victorian and Edwardian times,
the town has become a worthy destination to visit.
The famous Cango Caves are located nearby and are
definitely an attraction worth exploring, especially
since they boast some of the most beautiful calcite
caverns in the world.
For those travellers with additional time at their
disposal, a drive through Meiringspoort, a mountain
pass edged with massive precipices of volcanic strata
and scattered with a profusion of flora, is a most
rewarding day excursion.
Calitzdorp situated at the base of the Huis River
Pass overlooks the spectacular valley of the Gamka
River. The area is particularly well known for its
dried fruit, wine and port.
Uniondale is located in the eastern part of the Klein
Karoo. Visit the Water Mill and the Old English Fort,
a reminder of the Anglo-Boer War.
