Kalahari Desert

Kalahari Landscape

TRAVEL HIGHLIGHTS OF THE KALAHARI

Red Sand Dunes – Desert Animals – Isolation – Wide open spaces – Stars – Peace and Quiet – San Culture - Sunshine
KALAHARI CLIMATE
In summer, the temperature in the Kalahari basin ascends to more than 40 degrees Celsius at times. The low annual rainfall is hardly ever greater than 100 mm. The area is vulnerable to drought and it may not even reach 40 mm. Rainfall usually occurs between December and April, when thunderstorms activity occurs over the Kalahari. There is often more noise than rain, however when it does decide to come down it is usually in a rapid downpour. The desert is almost instantly transforms into a green mass of grass and pioneer flowers.

The Kalahari climate is at its most pleasant in the winter months (May - August), the air is dry, and temperatures range around a comfortable 25 degrees Celsius during the day. The nights can get bitterly cold at times. Winter is also the best time to encounter the animals. The drought usually concentrates the wildlife around waterholes and along the riverbeds.

KALAHARI - GENERAL INFORMATION

The Kalahari region starts in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa and extends right into Botswana and Namibia.

This arid area with its characteristic red sands and large acacia trees has been home to the nomadic San Bushmen for more than 3000 years. An assortment of wildlife thrives amid the harsh conditions.

Oryx, lion, leopard, cheetah, springbok, wildebeest, jackal and hyena, a wide variety of raptors inhabit the area.

There is currently very little infrastructure to explore this part of the Kalahari in South Africa.

The Tswalu Desert Lodge near Kuruman is the only luxury facility in the area. Charter flights can be arranged from Johannesburg or Cape Town.

If you are able to visit this area, don’t forget to look at the infinite canopy of stars of the Milky Way.

Kalahari Map

The skies are usually clear and there are no artificial lights to influence the visibility.
