Smit Pentow Marine Press Release Thursday October 11th 2001, 16h00
'Ikan Tanda' Update Number 37

Controlled dumping out of Hold No 1 (Potassium Nitrate) was completed yesterday afternoon at which time Hold No. 1 was ballasted to maintain grounding weight. Cargo discharge was then commenced from Hold No 2. This is still underway and proceeding slowly due to the number of empty cargo bags having to be removed before dumping over the side can continue. The swell has gradually increased during the day and the 'Ikan Tanda' is again taking water on deck, making the operation difficult. At present, just over 3000 tonnes of cargo has still to be discharged before the phase of the operation involving the refloating of the casualty can take place.

The launch 'Sea Carrier' disconnected the damaged hose string (which was to have been used for the pumping of Potassium Nitrate in a slurry format to an offshore distance of 300 metres) from the mooring buoy yesterday and demobilized this to Cape Town. She was able to come alongside the 'Ikan Tanda' this morning to transfer further equipment and removed a load of empty cargo bags to Hout Bay.

A condition of the permit granted to Smit Pentow Marine by the Department of Environmental Affairs & Tourism with respect to the dumping of the cargo is increased sampling activity, with results continuing to be fed back to the Department of Environmental Affairs & Tourism. To this end scientific monitoring of the area continues with sampling being carried out to ensure that maximum concentration levels as laid down in the dumping permit are not exceeded. Reports continue to show that nitrate concentration levels are within those defined by the dumping permit.

'Ikan Tanda' Update Number 36

The launch 'Sea Carrier' was able to come alongside the 'Ikan Tanda' this morning, transferring stiffeners made up to bolster the areas of structural failure in the engine room. She is presently engaged in recovering the hose, on site for the purpose of the pumping off of the Potassium Nitrate in a slurry format 300 metres offshore, which will be returned to Hout Bay for a full inspection after damage to her was reported.

Controlled dumping out of Hold No 1 (Potassium Nitrate) continues with a reported 100 tonnes of nitrates remaining in the hold this morning. Discharge has slowed somewhat due to the compacting of the cargo towards the bottom of the hold. Once Hold No 1 is removed of all cargo, discharge will commence out of Hold No 2. At present, 7570 tonnes of cargo have been discharged, which includes both bagged and bulk cargo. Smit Pentow Marine need to remove approximately 12 000 tonnes of cargo in order to begin the phase of the operation involving the refloating of the 'Ikan Tanda'.
