Shipwreck
Rescue Drama unfolds outside E-Gnu office
Images taken
05 September of helicopter airlift of sailors off our coastline.
The eighteen
crew members of the stricken cargo vessel, the Ikan Tanda, which
ran aground in galeforce winds off our conservation village of Scarborough
this afternoon, have been airlifted to safety by an Oryx Airforce
helicopter.
The 15 000-ton
vessel is laden with potassium nitrate plus 230 tons of oil and
poses an immediate and grave danger to the pristine shoreline of
the Cape Point Nature Reserve. The vessel is floundering on a reef
100 metres offshore. Further heavy seas and gale force winds could
cause her hull to crack.
The
vessel, which is registered in Singapore, was travelling from Chile
to Cape Town.
These
pics tell the story of when the vessel broke her anchor chain off
Misty Cliffs, having been pushed toward the shore by gale force
winds and heavy seas following engine failure. Swamped by 10 metre
swells, she drifted onto the reef off Scarborough beach, from where
the crewmen were airlifted to safety.
We will keep
these pages posted with fresh events surrounding this maritime disaster-in-the-making.
