Hiking is a form of walking, undertaken with the particular purpose of exploring and enjoying the scenery. It generally takes place as an organised activity with a guide or self guided trails into areas of relatively unspoiled wilderness. Overnight hiking or walking safaris in the African bush is more specialised activity requiring specially trained professional guides. Hiking in Africa is generally an activity is often simply called 'walking'. Hiking is one of the fundamental outdoor activities on which many others are based. It is often the only way to reach many beautiful places, which are fortunately beyond the access of vehicles. Purists regard hiking as the finest way to see nature. It is seen as better than a tour in a vehicle of any kind (or on an animal) because the hiker's senses are not intruded upon by distractions such as, engine noise, dust and fellow passengers. It has a benefit over standing in one place since the hiker can explore a wide area. On the other hand, hiking over long distances or over difficult terrain does require some degree of physical ability and knowledge, as well as good supply of water and some essential equipment. Hiking can be a very enjoyable and safe activity. However, there are inherent risks in hiking which can be mitigated by exercising safety measures. Wild-animal attacks may happen when hikers come upon an unsuspecting animal and surprise it. Hikers often seek beautiful environments in which to hike. Ironically, these environments are often fragile: hikers may accidentally destroy the environment that they enjoy. The action of an individual may not strongly affect the environment. However, the mass effect of a large number of hikers can degrade the environment. Generally, protected areas such as parks have regulations in place to protect the environment. If hikers follow such regulations, their impact can be minimized. Sometimes, hikers enjoy viewing rare or endangered species. However, some species are very sensitive to the presence of humans, especially around mating season. Hikers can learn the habits and habitats of the endangered species, in
order to avoid adverse impact. Hikers often enjoy the silence and solitude
of their surroundings. Staying quiet will also increase the likelihood
of encountering wildlife.
