Some big five destinations offer a malaria free option in South Africa.
The Eastern Cape, the Western Cape, the Northern Cape, parts of the Northwest
Province and the Waterberg area of Limpopo province are free of malaria.
Of these, the best game viewing is Addo in the Eastern Cape, the Kgalagadi
Transfrontier Park in the Northern Cape, Madikwe and Pilanesberg in the
Northwest, and Limpopo's Waterberg.
Malaria occurs throughout Eastern and Southern Africa. It is also found
in the north-eastern parts of South Africa (Mpumalanga, Kruger Park, Swaziland,
Kwa-Zulu Natal), and the time of year when it is most active is from mid
January to April after the rains.
Both chloroquine resistant and normal strains of malaria are in the region,
but with a few basic precautions malaria is easily manageable.
Malaria is transmitted by some female Anopheles mosquitoes, which are
sometimes active in the early evening and sometimes throughout the night,
usually when one is sleeping or sitting around campfires in the evening.
With sensible behavior, the problem can easily be managed.
