A hotel in Africa is much the same as an establishment in Europe and the rest of the world. The main purpose is to provide lodging, generally on a short-term basis. Hotels often provide a number of supplementary guest services such as a restaurant, a swimming pool or activities. Some hotels have conference services and promote groups to hold conventions and meetings at their locality. A hotel provides accommodation to the travelling community normally has a reception area and offers as a minimum breakfast. In general a hotel makes food and beverage services available to its guests. Accommodation has en-suite bathrooms and other features like television, a telephone and room service. Food and drink may be supplied by a small refrigerator (usually referred to as "mini-bar") containing snacks and drinks (to be paid for on departure), and tea and coffee making facilities (cups, spoons, an electric kettle and sachets containing instant coffee, tea bags, sugar, and creamer or milk). The cost and quality of hotels are usually indicative of the range and type of services available. Due to the enormous increase in tourism in Africa, standards, especially those of smaller establishments, have improved noticeably. For the sake of greater comparability, evaluation systems have been introduced, with the one to five stars categorization being most common. Africa has been awarded with some of the best Hotels in the world. Many top brands have entered the local travel market and provide first class accommodation and services throughout southern and east Africa.
