This is usually the main activity offered at all safari lodges and camps.
Wherever you go on safari, animals are by and large much less shy of vehicles
than they are of people on foot. In several of the parks they take no
notice of vehicles, so for picture taking opportunities a game drive vehicle
is the best chance of really getting close enough for that perfect shot.
Game Drives are usually done with a private safari guide and private
vehicle Landover, Land Cruiser or similar vehicle are specially customised
into open viewing vehicles. In East Africa vehicles are equipped with
a pop-up roof, minibuses are also used here because the park authorities
have until recently not permit open vehicles.
A Game drive safari is particularly rewarding experiences for the reason
that you are able to cover a large area in search of animals and proximity
to habituated animals is very good. With a private vehicle and guide you
have the luxury of real flexibility in planning your daily safari activities,
which is, after all, what safaris are all about.
Night game driving is not allowed in any National Parks, except if operated
by the park own vehicles and guides. There are a number of private concessions
which border some of the parks where game is excellent and night driving
is authorized.
