ELEPHANT BACK RIDES

Elephant back safaris are a very recent safari activity allowing guests the opportunity to encounter African elephants close-up and personally. The experience takes guests out on daily excursions in the wild bush. At night the elephants sleep in stables, affording participants a complete insight into the animal’s lives.

During the elephant back safaris guests are seated on a comfortable canvas-covered saddle, mounted behind an experienced elephant handler. From this vantage point they are able to view game from close proximity as the elephants move silently in single file through the bush. Plains game such as various antelope species, giraffe and zebra may be encountered.

It is also possible to see the Big Five as the reserves usually accommodates lions, wild elephant, leopard, rhino and buffalo.

Elephant-back safaris are available to day visitors too, but for guests staying over at the dedicated elephant riding facilities and there are usually luxury tented camps. Besides just elephant safari, the safari packages generally offer 4x4 game drives as daytime and night safari excursion.

Guests are at liberty to have as much time with the elephants as they wish, however the activity is not available to children under 12 years old. These are still wild animals and their behaviour can be unpredictable at times.
