Africa has wonderful diving opportunities. The coastline has a wealth
of marine diversity which is worth exploring. The range of dive sites
from the cold soft coral’s in the cold Atlantic, the thrill of encountering
sharks and marine mammals off the southern Cape and the tropical waters
off the East coast of Africa, there is so much to explore if you would
like to dive.
Leisure divers dive occasionally, normally when abroad on holiday. Leisure
divers are often inexperienced, either under-trained or over-qualified.
The call is usually not that these divers be restrained from diving, but
that they are encouraged to undergo a quick refresher course and a orientation
to get familiar with local diving scene. Many diver training agencies
in Africa such as NAUI and PADI offer training.
As the sport has become more popular, local operators have become more
aware of this sector of the travel market. The equipment is well maintained,
easy to use, affordable and reliable. Continued advances in SCUBA technology,
such as buoyancy compensators, modern diving regulators, diving suits
and dive computers, increased the safety, comfort and convenience of the
gear encouraging more people to take to the African waters.
.
Scuba-diving has become as popular a leisure activity in Africa as in
the Western world, and many diving locations have some form of dive shop
presence that can offer air fills, equipment and training.
