BALLOONING

Ballooning over the Namib Desert.
Early morning balloon safaris are always memorable.

One of the most exhilarating events in one’s life has got to be gliding over the African wilderness at day break in a hot-air balloon. Flying low over the wildlife rich plains or spotting elephant from above, this adds a whole new dimension to some of the earth’s most amazing places. To discover landscapes like deserts and inaccessible reserves with limited vehicle access, ballooning is the best way.

A hot air balloons use a single layered, fabric gas sack or envelope, with an opening at the underside called the throat. Attached to the envelope is a basket, or gondola, for carrying the passengers. Mounted above the basket and centered in the throat is a burner which injects a flame into the envelope, heating the air within. Raising the air temperature inside the envelope makes it lighter than the surrounding air. This causes the balloon and its cargo to rise.

Balloon flights are usually operated in the early morning when there is little or no turbulence. The wildlife is more active and the opportunity to observe animals from the air is greatly increased. During the day animals tend to seek our shelter from the hot African sun and move into the cover of thick bush.

Many balloon operators conclude the morning flight with a sumptuous champagne breakfast. The ground crew follow the progress of the flight and are always on standby in the event of any problems.
