Sand River Selous Location

Selous Game Reserve in Southern Tanzania, East Africa. The lodge is situated on the banks of the Rufiji River in the northern sector of the reserve. The Selous forms the basis of the biggest wildlife sanctuary in Africa, covering 75,000 sq. kilometers of virgin wilderness. It is a unique and untouched habitat bearing many key species and as such has been designated a world heritage site by the United Nations.

The Rufiji River is the largest waterway in East Africa and the lifeline of the Selous Game Reserve and its many tributaries and lakes. The river provides a refreshing viewpoint from which to watch the wildlife going about its business. Guests can chose to take a flat bottomed aluminium boat and drift downstream game viewing and bird watching, or alternatively take the boat upstream to Steiglers Gorge. Here, the river narrows into a deep rocky gorge where leopard are often spotted and the landscape is dramatically different. The shaded rocks and sands along the river banks make perfect picnic spots and somewhere to cast a line for a fearsome tiger fish. Sand Rivers’ reputation as one of the best game lodges in Africa has been built on the quality of its walking safaris and the standard of the guides. Walking is one of the most exciting and rewarding ways of viewing game transporting you into a world where you are truly part of the bush and not just an observer.

The central building has been beautifully designed using local wood and stone. Outside the central mess area is the swimming pool, set into rocks at the river’s edge and shaded by an ancient baobab. There are eight double or twin bedded cottages. Each room is open-fronted with an expansive verandah set on stilts, giving stunning private views of the river, and a spacious bathroom, with hot water powered by solar energy.

Walking Safaris, boat trips on the Rufiji River, game drives from open vehicles as well as fly camping. Fly camping involves spending a night or more under the stars, having walked, boated or game driven to an exclusive site. Guests sleep in mosquito net tents uniquely designed to provide a view of the night sky. The meals are cooked on site and are of the same high standards as the lodge. An armed guide and a crew consisting of headman, chef and waiter always accompany fly-camps.
