Serra Cafema Camp is located
in one of the remotest places on earth. The massive
red sand dunes blown up from the Coast, on the Namibian
side drop away into the fast flowing Kunene River
and are swept out to sea. On the opposite Angolan
side of the river, rugged exposed rocky landscape
draw a dramatically contrast.
After completing a flying safari at Kunene Camp,
Marion and I decided to rather walk down stream
to Serra Cafema. We passed deserted Himba villages
and palm groves along the river bank. Along the
way, free ranging donkeys and cattle eked out an
existence from the sparse vegetation and risked
falling prey to crocodiles along the banks of infested
waters.
Serra Cafema is a welcoming oasis in the relentless
desert environment.
The very luxurious camp has been sensitively built
and creates employment for some of Namibia’s
poorest inhabitants. We were most impressed with
the harmony which exists between the camp management
and local tribesman.
Serra Cafema is a place to relax and get as far
away from civilization as you possibly can. Activities
are totally flexible and guests have the freedom
to discover the river by boat or explore the vast
dunes in their own time.
A drive to the Hartman Valley reveals one of the
most beautiful settings I have encountered; vast
herds of antelope scattered along the earthy basin
in their quest for survive off the few edible morsels
that remain. |

The swimming pool and deck are a great
place to spend time, as is the library which is sited
near a rumbling rapid. The suites are well appointed and
give romantic couples and honeymooners a great sense of
privacy.
Thank you to all at Serra Cafema who made our stay so
special, in particular Gerrit, Christine and Rheno. |
