ACCOUNT OF A JOURNEY ON THE BLUE TRAIN, LUXURY RAIL IN SOUTH AFRICA

THE BLUE TRAIN
By Charlene Ramsden
Administration
Date of Visit: September 2004
The Blue Train – the ultimate in luxury rail travel – which I had the privilege of experiencing in September 2004, from Cape Town to Pretoria.

This route is a 27 hour journey through some of the most diverse and spectacular scenery imaginable. Since its inception in 1946 The Blue Train has been synonymous with the highest standards of service and luxury rivaling the finest 5-star hotels in grace, comfort and cuisine.

Well, this proved to be the case every step of the way, with everything you needed at your fingertips, a private butler to serve on you 24/7, wonderful cuisine and a luxuriously quite ride. The stop at Matjiesfontein was most entertaining as we were treated to an historical tour of the town, including a motor museum which was really something and then sherry at the old pub, whilst our local tour guide entertained us at the piano!
I felt like a queen bee all the way and when my family met me at Pretoria they were in shrieks when I waved the royal wave (which I felt very appropriate!)

Bravo Blue Train for a wonderful trip – it’s just such a pity it came to an end so soon!
