MY BOTSWANA SAFARI

I left Cape Town in 35ºc heat on the new direct flight from Cape Town to Maun on Air Botswana and landed in a downpour, rare for March.

I was very relieved to be greeted off my flight by a Chiefs Camp representative as well as my pilot for the charter flight to the lodge as I was always curious as to what happens on the ground.

We were shortly directed to our 5 seater plane, my first experience in such an aircraft, and although a bit apprehensive, I soon settled in for the 25 minute flight to the lodge.

We were unable to land on first approach to Chiefs Airstrip as there was a greeting party of about 30 breeding elephants trumpeting at us, but after circling the runway a few times, they dispersed and it was safe for us to land. The view of the Delta from the air in unbelievable, I had rather a stiff neck from the flight and a bit of a flat nose, from squashing up onto the window!

I met my guide Stanley who had kindly bought along some ice cold water. During the 15 minute drive we spotted impala, giraffe, ground squirrels and Stanley told us all about the termite mounds and how they play a huge role in the delta, as most of the islands in the rainy season are majority termite mounds.

Stanley was a super knowledgeable guide and I was fascinated by his explanations. Suddenly Chiefs Camp popped up, and we were welcomed at the camp by the camp managers and staff. The rooms at Chiefs were superbly decorated and every little detail was covered.

I enjoyed a relaxed afternoon game drive with other guests, as we learnt all about the delta and the various islands and enjoyed viewing the numerous species of game and birds.

My first night at was a bit nerve racking since this was my first experience on a safari trip. The lions roared what seemed like just outside my room, and I had a family of ground squirrels which had kindly moved into the bathroom, but they sounded more like rhinos stampeding! They were evicted early the next morning when I informed the camp managers.

The meals at Chiefs were awesome, which was a sure sign of what Botswana is all about – they love to feed you. Morning game drives begin at 5:30am with a tray of coffee and rusks in bed. After dusk and before dawn, guests are escorted to and from their rooms for safety reasons. After a quick bite for breakfast we were taken on a morning game drive, and again experienced fantastic game viewing. Lunch again was a massive feast, with freshly baked breads, salads and a huge array of delectable goodies.

After lunch it is siesta time, the rooms are cool and quiet during the day and I soon dozed off, and slept like a baby. At high tea I met all my other traveling partners who were to join me for another night at Chiefs and then 2 nights at Stanley’s Camp.

At high tea we met our new guide, Brown, and we went off on our afternoon game drive. Once again we were treated to excellent game viewing, including the famous Mombo Boys - 3 lion brothers - what a fantastically lazy bunch they were, they were beautiful and kindly allowed us a full modeling shoot.

We were also treated to an epic 20 minute chopper flip over the permanent waters of the delta. We had the option of doors or no doors and we were super brave and went without. It is beautiful to get a birds eye view of the delta and I was surprised that the helicopter did not disturb the game, We were able to spot a few hippos and plenty of Red Lechwe and water buck. The helicopter flip is a great optional extra and well worth it.

I would recommend Chiefs to anyone who is looking to view excellent game and be treated like royalty.
