·· Zimbabwe Safari:
Considerations when planning a tour to Victoria Falls and other safari destinations in Zimbabwe.
ZIMBABWE IS ONE OF THE FINEST WILDLIFE HAVENS IN AFRICA. UNFORTUNATELY, MANY TRAVELLERS ARE SCARED OFF BY MEDIA REPORTS ON THE POLITICAL TROUBLES IN THE COUNTRY.
HIGHLIGHTS & ATTRACTIONSUndoubtedly, the most famous attraction in Zimbabwe is Victoria Falls - a mile wide curtain of water plunging down a spectacular gorge on the Zambezi River. Referred to by locals as the "Smoke that Thunders" (Mosi-oa-tunya), Vic Falls lies on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. There is a wide choice of hotels and lodges on both sides of the falls - in the town of Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe or Livingstone in Zambia.
Hwange National Park is the country's premier wildlife reserve. Home to the Big Five, including great herds of elephant, Hwange is dominated by grassy plains, Mopane woodlands and pans. A large part of the park only accessible to visitors staying in private lodges. Lake Kariba, Matusadona & Mana Pools are the "water wilderness" safari regions of Zimbabwe. Lake Kariba - formed when the Zambezi was dammed - is best known for tiger fishing and dramatic sunsets across the waters. On the shores of Kariba is Matusadona National Park - a lakefront wilderness which is home to an multitude of animals, including elephant, black rhino, buffalo, eland, sable, roan, waterbuck, hippo & crocodiles.
Further down the Zambezi is Mana Pools, an untamed and truly wild corner of Africa. Mana is ranked as one of Africa's outstanding wildlife reserves and during the winter months it has the highest concentration of game on the entire continent. oth land and water.
GETTING THERE
Victoria Falls and Livingstone are both linked by daily scheduled flights from Johannesburg. The area is also easily accessible from Botswana's northern safari circuit of Chobe - either by road or air charter, which can include the majestic "Flight of Angels" over the falls.
POLITICAL & ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS
Over the past few years, Zimbabwe has been beset by political and economic woes, largely the result of the autocratic leadership & policy decisions of President Robert Mugabe. As a result, tourists have shied away from the country - with Victoria Falls being the notable exception. However, the regions of Hwange, Mana and Matusadona are also safe to visit - and currently the traveler can obtain some exceptional rates for a stay at a luxury lodge.
