·· Serengeti Safari:
Migration Wonderland
THE Serengeti offers unbeatable safari experiences; awe-inspiring scenery, both joy and heartbreaks from immersion in the chaotic symphony that is the struggle to be the fittest; to survive. It is a 'world top spot'. It can only be truly appreciated by spending as much time absorbing its glory, vastness, beauty and fecundity. It is the base for many of the world's leading wildlife photographers and film makers.
The Serengeti, over 14,500 km2 of endless grass plains and acacia savannah, is the home of millions of wildebeest, zebra, topi topi, hartebeest, eland, giraffe, warthogs and gazelles, with a supporting cast of predators and scavengers, such as lions, cheetah, leopard, hyena, wild dogs, jackals, caracal, serval cat, wild cat, eagles and vultures. The majority are on an unceasing annual search for new grass, The Great Wildebeest Migration. This cycle of birth, life and death commences with the birthing of an estimated 8,000 wildebeest calves every day, in mid February, of which only 60% will make it past their 4th month. By June they are all heading North to dry season pastures along the Mara River before heading south in November to spread out on the short grass plains of the Southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation area from December to May.
Despite advertising to the contrary, the Serengeti is a year round destination because many thousands of animals do not migrate, they are permanent residents, living close to water sources.
The only way in, or out, is to fly or drive from Arusha.
