·· Ngorongoro Crater Safari:
Fabulous Volcano Rim
THE Ngorongoro Crater, called 'The 8th Wonder of the World', because no-where else, in Africa, can one see so much close-up wildlife in such a small but spectacular setting. It is the world's largest unbroken caldera at about 20km in diameter, which supports an extremely high density of wildlife due to its year through water supplies. It is the only place in Tanzania to see Black Rhino.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area consists of much more than the Crater. The southern part is made up of an 80km long range of dramatic volcanoes sweeping up out of the Great Rift Valley while the Northern part is made up of the short grass plains, shared with Serengeti National Park, of the annual migratory eco-system.
In this unique area, the cattle herding warriors, the legendary Maasai, co-exist, in a centuries-old, harmony with their wild animal neighbours. The volcanic peaks (the highest over 3,600m), gullied escarpments, steep valleys, soda filled lakes, montane forests, grassy slopes and savannah plains, all combine to form a particularly appealing, rugged and spectacular backdrop to their disappearing lifestyle.
Accommodation is limited to 4 lodge/hotels ranging from 2 to 5 star quality and booked well in advance. Many people stay around Karatu or Lake Manyara, where all levels of accommodation are available. Apart from the few well-used tourist areas, the majority of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is little visited and still offers the more adventurous visitor the opportunity to experience Africa as the early European explorers found it.
