MOZAMBIQUE is fast becoming a great destination for self drive touring, as the roads have gone through major upgrading, opening up the magnificent coastline to self driver travelers.
However, there are certain rules one must follow if planning to drive in Mozambique. Be aware that the police have a reputation for finding problems trivial and imagined with vehicles for which large 'fines' are imposed. Wear your seatbelt at all times as this is an offence which often leads to further examination of your vehicle.
Also, stick to the new roads and do not venture into the hinterland, where landmine clearing is ongoing by international agencies following years of civil war. If you are polite, have your vehicle and papers in strict order and obey all the road rules, you stand less chance of being harrassed by authorities.
If you plan to self drive in Mozambique, you must hire a vehicle in South Africa (Nelspruit is the closest deport to the border). However, there are cross border vehicle fees to incur.
