·· Etosha Safari:
Searing Mirages
ETOSHA Pan is one of the largest national parks in Africa and is certainly one of the most unique safari destinations.
Surrounding the national park are some private reserves, which offer far superior lodging to the government rest camps within Etosha. In the private camps, there is also better opportunity for wildlife viewing, including walking tours and night drives.
Etosha is home to the beautiful oryx or gemsbok antelope, which make a marvelous sight "floating" across the hazy mirages of the vast salt pans. Bird life is also prolific, with 340 identified species, including over 35 different birds of prey.
This "Place of Dry Water" is best to visit during the dry months between May and September, when temperatures are cool and the wildlife thirsty.
If planning to do a self-drive safari to Etosha, it is best to include the Damaraland region in your itinerary as the area provides some tremendous contrasting landscapes to Etosha and breaks the long journey from Windhoek.
