·· Mt Kenya Safari:

The Beautiful Kenya Highlands

BATIAN Peak on Mt Kenya, at 5,199 metres is Africa's second highest peak and the outstanding landmark in the Central Highlands. The Central Highlands are heavily populated and cultivated by the Kikuyu tribe and are very much the political and agricultural heartland of Kenya. The highlands are on the Eastern wall of the Rift Valley and consist of 3 main areas, the Aberdares, Mt Kenya and Meru.

It is a hugely popular with visitors because of the diversity of parks and reserves ensuring ever-changing scenery and concentrations of wildlife. Parks and reserves include Lakes Naivasha, Nakuru, Baringo and Bogoria, Hell's Gate, Aberdare, Mt Kenya and Meru. It is also an overnight stopping point between Nairobi and the Northern parks/reserves of Buffalo Springs, Shaba, Samburu and Marsabit. The area is well serviced by all types of accommodation. There are scheduled flights to Nanyuki (Mt Kenya), Meru , Lewa Downs and Samburu for the Northern areas.

Getting up early is the most reliable way to get to see the summit peaks of Mt Kenya. The 2 highest peaks, Batian and Nelion, can only be reached by experienced mountaineers, but Point Lenana (4,985m) can be reached by mountain fit trekkers, but spend 3 nights on the mountain to avoid altitude sickness or worse. Traversing the 2 high peaks is exciting and worth the extra time and effort. Best times are mid-January to late February and late August through September. Trekking through the foothills or circling it by car, as part of a safari, are also well worth it.

NB: When considering a safari in Kenya, please be aware that East African parks and reserves have daily park fees per person of at least $100 - this is over and above the accommodation costs. There is also no public transport that can be taken to access the Kenya parks - to experience these areas you need a guide and vehicle, before you start looking at acommodation options. We not sell any low budget accommodation options in Kenya, so please be realistic in your cost expectations and we will always do our best to assist you.
