·· Amboseli & Tsavo Safari:
Great Savannah Grasslands
WITH Kilimanjaro as a backdrop, the bull elephants of Amboseli, feeding in the permanent swamps, are probably the most famous in the world. Buffaloes, lions, cheetah and all the savannah animals are to be found and fairly easily as there is not a lot of cover. However, the park suffers from erosion and elephant damage. The local Maasai, recently made responsible for managing Amboseli, face a huge challenge to balance the needs of cash-generating wildlife with their own needs. All levels of accommodation, in and outside the park, are available. Visitors arrive by road from Namanga, usually, or on the daily scheduled flight. There is a bad road to/from Tsavo West.
Tsavo (22,000km2) is Kenya's largest park and is divided into Tsavo East and Tsavo West. The scenery is stunning and there are few visitors. All the typical savannah game can be found but, as the cover is higher, the game spotting is more challenging. There are around 100 black rhino to be found. Many on a Mombasa beach holiday come here for their wildlife fix.
Tsavo West has Kilimanjaro in the background, extinct volcano cones, swamps and natural springs making it the busier. Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary is 70km2 of fenced black rhino protection area. Most lodges are around Mzima Springs in the Northern half and are generally excellent. Most visitors arrive by road from Nairobi or Mombasa while a few come from Chyulu Hills and Amboseli.
Tsavo East is flatter drier and most wildlife is concentrated along the Galana River. There are only a few lodges and the chance of having Africa to yourself is very high.
