·· Children on Safari
FAMILY SAFARIS IN AFRICA CAN BE LOADS OF FUN AND A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE FOR ALL.
FOR YOUNGSTERS, A SAFARI IN THE WILDS WILL BE A FORMATIVE EXPERIENCE, HELPING TO
BUILD CHARACTER AND NUTURE RESPECT FOR THE EARTH AND HER CREATURES.
There are many family holidays on offer around the world, but an African
safari offers a wonderful opportunity for a whole family - from grandparents
to children to interact with different cultures and wildlife, and
more importantly, to interact with each other in a superbly unique
environment, whilst enjoying the traditional fun and adventure. A safari helps nurture in children a deep love and appreciation of nature, its wonders and mysteries, and a tour to Africa with the family will possibly be the greatest holiday ever taken. Many hotels and safari lodges listed on our site are child friendly - we display their policy towards children from toddlers upward, as some establishments have different policies for various age groups.
At most lodges, arrangements are in place for children to be taken care of by trained caregivers, guides and naturalists, whilst the adults can participate, or do other things, as they wish.
Children between the ages of 8 and 18 will gain the most from a safari experience.
Air travel can also be used to allow more time for fun and educational activities, and less time becoming agitated, tired and restless on bumpy and dusty roads.
A concern of many parents is malaria and the effects of medication or malaria prophylaxis. Fortunately, South Africa has some wonderful malaria free safari regions, including the Waterberg, Welgevonden, Madikwe and Pilanesberg, all of which are about 3 to 4 hours drive from Johannesburg. In the Eastern Cape are the Addo and Shamwari game reserves - also malaria free.
Perhaps one of the best family safaris is a combination of the Madikwe and Waterberg regions. We have compiled a suggested Family Safari Tour, incorporating Jaci's Safari Lodge in Madikwe and Ants Nest in the Waterberg - a tour which includes a Big Five experience with hiking, adventure, horse riding, fun and relaxation. A great way to end a safari is a few days relaxation on the beach - either in Cape Town, the Garden Route or Mozambique. View Recommended Family Safari Tour
