·· Safari Lodges
THE traditional
safari lodge or camp is usually a small, intimate establishment, generally
with only about 16 to 24 guests. Selection ranges from old-style tented
camps, to luxury tented and thatched lodges, handsomely furnished
and enticing in every respect. As these lodges cater to small groups
of guests, have high staff complements and offer excellent facilities
and cuisine, the traveller can expect to pay for the pleasure of a
safari in a private concession area, far away from crowds.Larger lodges, however, can be found along the perimeters of the great wildlife reserves, particularly the Kruger Park region of South Africa. The appeal of these establishments is that they are easy to access on self drive safaris and usually ofer excellent value for money.
Other types of safari accommodation hark back to yesteryear and often appeal to younger travellers and adventurers. These are safari tents, which range from two bed igloo tents to larger, semi-permanent canvas tents used on overland safaris.
There are also a variety of country retreats, guest houses, lodges and hotels situated near some of the wildlife regons or wilderness areas, particularly in South Africa and parts of Namibia.
