Rusinga Island is in the north eastern corner of Lake Victoria, the world's second largest freshwater lake (26,800 sq miles) and the source of the river Nile. The island is in Kenyan waters, with a view of the beautiful mountainous region overlooking the lake and is known for its abundance of exotic birds and the huge Nile Perch - caught daily. These fish have been known to weigh as much as 200 lbs.

The island is a mecca for bird watchers, with over 100 species recorded on and around Rusinga. Many nest in the gardens of the Club including a pair of fish eagles and the exotic double-toothed barbet. Game drives to Ruma can be arranged, one of the most exquisite and unusual of the Kenyan National Parks. The last surviving group of Roan antelope in Kenya can be seen here - a large antelope with magnificent black and white facial mask-like marking and swept -back horns. Other special animals include the Jackson hartebeest and Rothschild giraffe. There are plains game together with oribi, bohor reedbuck, impala, topi, waterbuck and buffalo. Leopard are frequently sighted.

Rusinga Island Club is a delightful small lodge, which can accommodate a maximum of 10 people in thatched cottages, each with a superb view of the lake. The rooms each have their own bathrooms and are attractively decorated with local ornamental baskets and colourful fabrics. For larger groups there is additional accommodation for a further 6 people in luxury tents. Staying at Rusinga Island Club is a real treat, its large comfortable cottages with superb vistas over the lake allow you a day's rest before heading back into the bush. The Roberts family own and manage the lodge, which they built in 1986. The atmosphere is informal and relaxed.

A visit to the Luo fishing village along the shore feels like being transplanted back in time. Boating excursions, water skiing and windsurfing are all available. Included in the many activities is a walk to the famous archaeological site where Dr. Mary Leakey discovered Proconsul Africanus, now Heseloni, said to be 17.5 million years old.
