River House Location

River House is situated on the outskirts of Malelane town. Located on the banks of the Crocodile River, the southern boundary of the Kruger National Park, River House offers excellent views of the wildlife habitat. The tranquil position is a convenient sojourn while exploring the game rich region.

Styled around the local bushveld beat, the architecture of River House blends in with the African vibe. The main structures are under thatched roofs, while an interesting combination of corrugated iron, steel and terracotta tiled roofs cover the balconies and verandas. Although the building is relatively new, the incorporation of unique character pieces and collectibles into the construction is an interesting feature of the design. A wooden deck has been constructed down at the river from which guests can observe the variety of animals and birds. The big five are regularly sighted from here. Hippo, buffalo, elephant and various antelope often visit the property to graze the lawn and browse the shrubs. The riverbank is out of bounds to all, as visitors are valued more as guests than croc food.

The interiors provide a relaxed atmosphere with the emphasis on comfort. Each component of the tasteful furnishing throughout the house has been collected over many years. The personal touch is very obvious here as our hosts pay special attention to detail. Twelve en-suite bedrooms each with its own balcony overlook the river and Kruger National Park. Television and telephones are an unwanted intrusion in the rooms and detract from the feel of the setting. These modern day conveniences are however available in the communal area. Dinners are served in the dining room or out on the Veranda. The food here is old fashioned home cooking affair. The chef has a distinct slant to typical South African dishes. There is not much which can beat the bushveld breakfast here; Sun ripened fruit from the area, fresh farm produce, cereals, yoghurt and real coffee.

Malelane Gate is the best access to the southern region of Kruger National Park. Early morning and afternoon excursions are arranged. The network of routes in this fertile region of the Park yields some of the finest chances of encountering the wealth of animal life here.
