Portswood Hotel Attractions
Not too long ago Table Bay and its docklands were very much part of Capetonian daily life, but with land reclamation (the Foreshore) and highway construction the links were severed. Gone was the seafront leisure beach and the small fishing boats, to be replaced by oil storage tanks, a wilderness of grimy buildings and barriers, and a raised motorway that stands as a monument to poor planning and taste.
Now sea and city have merged again, reunited by the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront scheme, a multi-billion rand venture that has revitalized the docks. It draws its inspiration from successful harbour projects in San Francisco, Sydney and elsewhere, but it is not simply a copy: it is designed to meet local needs; it has its own distinctive personality, and its setting, beneath the moody grandeur of Table Mountain, is both unique and exciting.
Portswood Hotel Facilities
The nautical theme chosen for the PortsWood Hotel has been carried throughout the private as well as public areas of the hotel. All the rooms, whether you choose to stay in one of 58 Twin Rooms, 36 Double Rooms (queen bed) or 8 suites (king bed, living area and mini-bar) offer views of either the harbour or full splendour of Table Mountain.
The bright spacious rooms are fully equipped with individual air-conditioning, DSTV, tea/coffee machines, en-suite bathroom with bath, shower and toilet and direct dial telephones. Although it is situated on the Waterfront, the hotel is far enough removed from the actual working harbour to ensure a good night's sleep.
The 80 seater Quarterdeck Restaurant is a relaxed yet elegant restaurant, uniquely housed in the Old Convict Station building. This beautifully restored National Monument with its rich history is a perfect setting to sample. The Quarterdeck's legendary breakfasts or sumptuous buffets and comprehensive menus. A selection of fine wines, including the best the Cape has to offer, are the ideal complement to your meal. Light meals and snacks are served on the Terrace from 10h00 to 22h00 daily, while the Cocktail Bar is open for refreshment from noon till 23h00. 24-hour room service is also available. The PortsWood has a number of additional amenities and services to ensure that you have a memorable stay. A sparkling swimming pool, covered parking, baby-sitting services, same day laundry and dry cleaning and 24-hour security are available. Guests are also welcome to use the facilities at the neighbouring Commodore Hotel, which include a well equipped gymnasium with sauna, steam room and personal trainers.
A compact boardroom containing state-of-the-art equipment is available for meetings and private dinner parties for up to 25 people. For those requiring larger facilities for up to 220 people, the PortsWood's sister hotel, The Commodore, situated right next door, has two superb function rooms available.
