The move of the Oman Sultan from Lamu to further off shore Zanzibar left Lamu dormant in a time warp for three hundred years. There are still no cars on the island and the narrow streets of the old town are very much as they were. Lamu is a Swahili town resulting from a combination of trade and Islam, modified by the environment. Trade provided wealth, Islam the incentive for permanent settlements reflected in the requirement of Islamic canon law that Friday noon prayer be held in a permanently settled location. The monsoon winds supplied the energy the ships needed and the building materials, coral and mangrove were available on the shores. The streets of Lamu are narrow, cool and quiet. They are surprisingly intimate spaces enclosed by massive stone buildings whose thick coral rag walls give the town its distinct colour and texture.

Set upon a headland of Lamu Island, Peponi offers a view of two worlds. On one hand, there are the historical scenes of Lamu Old Town, the calling to prayer of the mosques, black buibui-clad hennaed ladies and tiny, one roomed, local shops. On the other hand, there is a magical tropical beach, considered crowded with ten people and rimmed by the Indian Ocean's endlessly moving blue waters Peponi Hotel was never planned. It simply happened. Starting as the Korschen family house, over the past 30 years Peponi has grown into a 24-bedroom hotel offering attentive service, delicious meals and endless relaxation. Dinner is distinguished by a plethora of new ways of celebrating seafood with ginger, lime and garlic. Mangrove crabs, warm water lobster, squid, giant prawns and fish of all varieties. For something a little more local, a Swahili menu is also available, which can be eaten in the traditional way, on the floor, around a huge brass platter. Peponi is personal; you arrive as a guest, and leave as a friend, anticipating your return before your departure.
