The summer rains
in Kafue start in November and reach their peak in February. Then, from April
or May
onwards, the area looks strikingly similar to the Okavango Delta in Botswana,
with large expanses of water interspersed with small woodland islands or opening
out into wide grassy patches known as “dambos”.
Antelope are plentiful on
these plains, which are characterized by termite mounds, phoenix palms and
fig trees.
The dominant feature of the north is the Busanga Plain, which is a massive
floodplain fed by the Lufupa River.
It is in this region that Wilderness Safaris have opened their wonderful new
camps as game viewing in the south
is more difficult due to very thick woodlands.
