Makweti Safari Lodge Attractions
Rolling wooded mountains cut by deep rocky ravines and majestic gorges make the Welgevonden Private Game Reserve an evocative piece of Africa. Aptly meaning ‘well found’, this is a place of rare and rugged beauty, plentiful wildlife and prolific bird life. Spectacular scenery and excellent game viewing make Welgevonden quite unlike anywhere else on earth. To visit here is to experience the spirit of true wilderness.
Welgevonden is home to over 50 different mammals, including the Big Five, and boasts one of the largest populations of white rhino on a private reserve anywhere in Africa. There are rare and unusual species too, such as brown hyena, aardwolf and aardvark – all best seen at night. The grassy plains abound with antelope from the largest eland to the diminutive duiker, and cheetah, lion and leopard are always close by. It’s the diversity of habitat on the reserve that encourages such a wide range of wildlife as well as over 300 bird species, including rare blue cranes.
Makweti Safari Lodge Facilities
Since no more than ten guests can be accommodated in the elegant stone and thatch suites at Makweti, your experience is sure to be leisurely and luxurious. Makweti's main lodge, built into natural rock formation in the craggy Waterberg Mountains, is a dramatic architectural synthesis. Antique African art and furnishings invite you to quietly peruse our African library or settle into a lively conversation at the zebra bar while you savour a crimson African sunset. Candlelit gourmet dinners are served in our formal dining-room or under the starry night sky in the boma by a flickering campfire.
Makweti's cuisine reflects an artful fusion of exotic spices or the ancient trade routes, home made soups, game meats, and a wide assortment of health conscious choices.
Fine South African Estate wines and desserts complement every dinner.
