| | On the southwestern slopes of Kilimanjaro lies Makoa Farm, an abandoned coffee estate that has been lovingly resurrected over the past four years. |
|
|
The Farm is near Kilimanjaro’s Machame Gate with access to the spectacular rainforest on the mountain’s lower slopes, home to the Chagga people, whose small villages dot the hillsides. On the high plateau to the south, Masai graze their cattle. The area is rich in diversity and surprisingly untouristed. Makoa Farm is a 60 minute drive from Arusha, 35 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport and 20 minutes from the old German town of Moshi.

The owners are as passionate about wildlife and wilderness as they are about running a successful coffee farm. Therefore much of the farmland is devoted to conservation. Though you won’t find big game here, the birdlife is phenomenal, monkeys abound, and there is no shortage of bush pig and small antelopes. Makoa Farm is a working farm mangaged by two veternarians. A stay here is a true "east African home stay" experience and offers a relaxed and intimate look into life in Tanzania.

Tented cottages with stunning views of Kilimanjaro are situated in the gardens. Additional accommodation in the "papaya drying room" and in the farm house. Meals are served on the verandah.
Makoa-Farm is a colonial coffee farm that has been lovingly resurrected. The old farmhouse is now an intimate lodge featuring two cottages with private verandas and views of Mt. Kilimanjaro, a guesthouse suitable for families – children are welcome, and a comfortable room in the farmhouse. Much of the farmland is devoted to conservation. The birdlife is phenomenal; monkeys, small antelopes and nocturnal game abound.
Experience the African landscape from the veranda, while hiking or from horseback – a refreshing change to being enclosed in a safari vehicle. We ride through wilderness and farmland, enjoying stunning scenery with opportunities for viewing Kilimanjaro up-close.
