The land on which the Lodge lies has been owned by the Morrison Family since the 1930's. Guests are able to enjoy safari drives and boat trips into the heart of the wetlands or do safari drives to the glorious coastal beaches of the Indian Ocean or visit the world famous Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve.

Exclusively situated on the banks of the lake, this 12 bed luxury Lodge welcomes you to an elegantly decorated 'home from home'. Private, air-conditioned suites are splashed with a mixture of Eastern and African Interior styles. Rooms are privately set and connected by raised walkways. The rooms have separate bathrooms and outdoor showers. A quick cocktail from the well-stocked bar fridge prepares you for the evening feasts! Out by the pool, an interconnecting walkway leads you to a private camouflaged bush pool that allows you to sit, unnoticed as you watch the wildlife on and around the Lake.

Makakatana offers an unforgettable boat trip on Lake St Lucia viewing hippo, crocodile, fish eagle, magnificent birdlife and other animals. Afternoon game drives take you exploring and seeking out hippo and crocodile and wildlife within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Guests enjoy ‘full day’ safaris and are advised to inform the Lodge of the Safari they would prefer to book... Makakatana will take you on a boat trip on Lake St Luica and then guests enjoy a picnic in the wetlands. Guests can also book a full day trip to the glorious unspoiled beaches on the Eastern Shores and enjoy walking along the coastline, snorkelling and swiming in the warm Indian Ocean. Another day trip is a safari to the Big 5 Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. Birdlife (Land & Water) +/- 360 species!! OTHER OPTIONAL EXTRA ADVENTURES: These adventures may be put together for you in a special itenerary according to the number of days spent at Makakatana. Dumazulu Cultural Village Zulu Craft Centres - St Lucia centre or Ilala Weavers. These can also be included into an itenerary & taken by a Makakatana Ranger. Guests can book Turtle watching trips that extend into the early hours of the morning - November - March Deepsea fishing Flyfishing at Cape Vidal Lake Fishing Whale watching - May – September. Visit the Crocodile Centre or book Horse Trail. Air flips over the coastline and Lake can also be booked.
