Madikwe River Lodge Location

Just 7km south of the Botswana border near Gaborone, and a three and a half hour drive - north of Johannesburg - Madikwe covers 75 000 ha bushveld area - a pristine sanctuary, with comfortable accommodation and an abundance of wildlife. Its gates opened in October 1994, after the largest relocation programme in the country. The programme, known as Operation Phoenix, brought 8500 animals into Madikwe from as far a field as Zimbabwe's Gonarezhou National Park, South Africa's Kwazulu Natal Parks, Kruger and Etosha .

The 10 000 animals at Madikwe today comprise twenty seven mammal species - including the big Five . The two hundred and sixty elephants are the second largest population of a private nature reserve in South Africa, and the variety of other animals is impressive. Some 230 species of bird thrive here, including Secretary Birds, Korhaan, Namaqua Sand Grouse, Yellow Billed Horn Bill and a variety of raptors.

Madikwe River Lodge - Luxury accommodation in sixteen thatched chalets on the bank of the Marico River. The chalets are tastefully and colourfully furnished with cosy beds, ethnic mats, art work, tiled floors and mosquito netting. Each two-bed chalet has an en-suite bathroom, lounge and wooden viewing deck overlooking the Marico. The thatched central entertainment/dining area has a magnificent viewing deck, a swimming pool and open plan bar, lounge and dining room.

Dawn and dusk drives are offered daily in customised vehicles. Special interest drives can be arranged.
