Lythwood Lodge Attractions
"Lythwood" means place of stone and its origin is derived from the stone extracted from the old quarry on the 275 acre estate which was used to build Lythwood Lodge in 1944. A certain Dr. L V Pearson who was a well known orthopaedic surgeon acquired the estate in 1942 and using volunteer Italian prisoners of war captured in the East and North Africa campaigns built the main structure of the manor house that exists today. The skill of these Italians, notably in their metal and woodwork transformed the property into a gracious house. After the property had changed hands a number of times the current owners Michael and Ann Peacock took possession in 1996 and opened the property as an hotel in June 1997. The first inhabitants in the Midlands area were the San people (Bushmen) who were nomadic cave dwellers and existed by hunting the vast herds of game that moved between the Drakensberg and the coastal region. Later the Midlands region became the hunting grounds of the Zulu kings and when the first European settlers arrived around 1850 there were no permanent residents, which created a serious labour problem for the farmers. Over time that changed and today it remains a farming community mainly involved in the dairy and cattle industry.

The room has sufficient tables to accommodate 24 diners in comfort and style and for special occasions such as weddings up to 50 can be accommodated. In winter a log fire in the large fireplace adds a sparkle to the gleaming silver and Swazi glassware on display and on warm summer evenings the French doors open on to the garden. The crockery , cutlery and glassware have been specially chosen to provide the diner with that sense of opulence which accompanies the fine food and drink. Our table is of an international standard. We offer cuisine of a Franco / South African style. Combining fresh South African ingredients, like ostrich, kingklip or bush pig, with delicate sauces and flavours inspired from French cuisine. "Wine is one of the few direct links between nature and art." To show our commitment and belief in South African wines we have developed a winelist giving a good representation of some of the finest estates the Cape has to offer. To support this we entered our winelist in the 2000 South African Diners Club Winelist Awards, and won their prestigious Merit Award. Our aim: Lythwood Lodge combines high calibre wines, with select food, in an elegant dining environment. Together with lasting company we achieve a memorable & unique occasion.

Lythwood Lodge Additional Information
Lythwood Lodge is a place for lovers of the countryside. The less active can laze by the pool listening to the extensive bird life whilst the more active can go hiking through the indigenous forest and then onto the plateau at the top. By having three different bird habitats within a comparatively small area Lythwood is blessed with a wide variety of bird life and to date 140 plus species have been identified including the Martial eagle, South Africa's largest eagle. For the trout fly fisherman there is the option of fishing either the Lions River - about 800 metres - or the dam immediately in front of the lodge. To catch a trout from the river is much more difficult than the dam but so much more rewarding! On a summers day the game of croquet is a popular pastime. Lythwood is blessed with some excellent golf courses within a short motoring distance of the lodge. See under surroundings for further details. Should the weather be inclement guests can browse among the books in the library, participate in a 1000 piece puzzle or alternatively play a game of bridge, chess or backgammon or something perhaps more mundane like Cluedo - the choice is varied and it is yours.
