Benguerra is approximately
11 kms by 5 kms, and the forest, savannah and wetland eco-systems
sustain a diverse population of fauna and flora on the island,
which was declared a National Park in 1971. There are 3 fresh
water lakes which host numerous birds as well as crocodile.
The interior of the island has many permanent pans where the
local residents grow crops such as sweet potatoes around the
edges and they are the nesting grounds for many birds. January
2003 – On a recent night dive guests were fortunate to see
approximately 80 Devil Rays gliding above them. Later they
enjoyed a swim with the biggest, most relaxed fish in the
ocean – The Whale Shark!
