There are a number of fossil river courses south of Lagoon Camp which flood in some years attracting large numbers of birds and animals. Our guides have found the remains of bushman settlements on these early banks with pottery shards dating from a few hundred to several thousand years ago.
North of the camp the banks become more defined on the Botswana side leading to dry forests right onto the banks of the lagoons left behind by the river.
These bushed areas provide shelter and cover to large herds of elephant, buffalo and plains game when they come to drink. However the remain ever alert for the presence of Kwando's large predators - prides of lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and hyena.
Seasonally the game move beyond the plains into the endless Mopane scrub and forests that extend into the diatance. These significant trees provide the wet season feeding grounds to the herds that concentrate on the river front in the dry season.
Rare and endangered species like Roan and Sable antelope are regularly seen in the dry months as they move to water.

The Lagoon Camp boat floats noiselessly in the current of the Kwando river, while you spot game from the upper deck. Stop for a spot of fishing in the river or its numerous lagoons and catch the fighting tiger fish, bream, catfish and pike.
