The third oldest magistrate area in South Africa, Swellendam claims a heritage of more than 250 years. A fascinating past has resulted in the eclectic architecture which has become the base of its remarkable lure. Built in the characteristic Cape Dutch style, Klippe Rivier, once housed both president's Steyn and Reitz.

The authentic home with its white walls has the fine finishing of yellowwood timber. Antique pieces adorn the main homestead with the original subtlety of days gone by. This ambience has been kept in the well appointed luxury suits, which were once part of the "wagon house" and livery building. The capacious rooms offer en-suite bathrooms and some have their own fireplace, loft rooms under thatch, each equipped with a private balcony and decorated in a provencal style. Klippe rivier has vegetable gardens, fruit orchards and creamy farm milk is collected daily. An old slave bell rings out half an hour before dinner, with time enough to enjoy pre-meal drinks in the sitting room or library. Soft candle-light set the mood for fine table d'hôte dinner.

Some of the most beautiful countryside surrounds the estate. Outings may include excursions to De Hoop Nature Reserve to watch birds at the International recognised vlei, observing the great pods of Southern Right Whales which visit the Cape south coast or simply journeying through the scenic beauty of the region. A great variety of local walks can be undertaken nearby, with horse back riding and canoeing as other options to be considered.
