South Luangwa National Park: South Luangwa National Park covers an area of 9,050 square kilometers and offers some of the best game viewing in Africa. This area is bordered by the Muching escarpment to the west and the Luangwa River to the east. The Luangwa Valley forms part of the Great Rift Valley and the Valley floor nestles some 800 metros below the surrounding plateau, with the Luangwa River carving its way through the center. The River is the lifeblood of the region and supports the profusion of wildlife that can be seen. It forms the sanctuary to one of Africa's most important elephant populations and also boasts large number of antelope including impala, puku, kudu, bushbuck and waterbuck. Lion is also common, but the park is especially famous for its leopard. The Thornicroft's giraffe and the Cookson's wildebeest are also both unique to the valley. The Luangwa River hosts a greater number of Nile crocodiles than any other river. More than 400 hundred bird species can also be found here.
