Mosaic of Water, Islands & Swamps
THE greater St Lucia Wetland is a mosaic of water, reed-covered islands, forested dunes and papyrus swamps, with a focal point of the great expanse of Lake St Lucia, where one may fish alongside crocs and hippos, while the cry of the fish eagle is heard above. The eastern shores are characterized by towering, vegetated dunes, which slope down to miles and miles of unspoilt beaches, secluded bays and offshore reefs renowned for their excellent diving and snorkeling.

Along the western shores of the lake there are over 385 bird species recorded, while a walk along the shores will take the traveler back millions of years, due to the abundance of ammonites and other marine fossils, while between October and February, the leatherback turtles come ashore to lay eggs. Two months later, the eggs hatch, but only two in every thousand hatchlings reach adulthood.
The magnificent group of lodges at Phinda Game Reserve, each situated in a unique ecosystem, provide the traveler with an exclusive encounter with this wonderful enclave in the African heartland.
