Mountain Landscapes
THE island mountains of Madikwe have a wonderful diversity of interesting landscapes and vegetation and has become one of South Africa's prime eco-tourism destinations.Only two decades ago, the area was overgrazed farmland, but in one of the largest wildlife translocation projects in Africa, "Operation Phoenix", some 10 000 animals of 27 species were reintroduced into the reserve.

It is now home to the Big Five, and has the largest elephant population outside of Kruger National Park, as well as an abundance of antelope, wild dog, hyena and hippo. The reserve is aimed at the more exclusive end of the market, and luxury lodges cater to guests on a fully-inclusive basis. Game viewing in the early morning, late afternoon and at night is in open 4x4 vehicles. There are also guided walks and delicious bush barbeques.
