Sacred Place of the Bushmen

THERE is a seriously interesting and hauntingly beautiful corner of South Africa called the Cedarberg - a place which once was sacred ground to the San (Bushmen) people, who freely roamed the rugged landscape in search of food and water.

Today, through the efforts of conservationists, the visitor can be renewed and invigorated in this special wilderness, and gain an insight into a people whose ancestors left an imprint of their lives in numerous rock art formations - the world's largest open-air art gallery.

To reach the Cedarberg and Bushmanskloof, it is best to transfer from Cape Town by road, as this journey will take the traveler along a rugged gravel road through the stark, eerie and thrilling Kouebokkeveld (lit: Cold Buck Field), where nomads traveling by donkey cart are still a familiar sight.

An alternative route takes one through the citrus and wine growing regions around Clanwilliam, where the tarred road ends and the real adventure begins. The climb over the dusty Pakhuis Pass winds through gargantuan clusters of mottled orange boulders - a giants playground of weird shapes and forms that leads to the entrance to Bushmans Kloof.

This Cedarberg area takes in some of the most breathtaking scenery and rock formations and is a proclaimed Wilderness Area. Flowing through the valleys of this mountain range are numerous streams and rivers, which led to its attraction to both wild animals and the San people.

At Bushmans Kloof, a 7500 hectare private wilderness area, visitors have a unique opportunity to discover this virtually unknown part of South Africa, to enjoy game drives, guided rock art tours, river walks and mountain hikes. Swimming in one of the crystal clear rock pools provides a sharp infusion of the spirit of this ancient and mysterious place.

Bushmans Kloof is home to over 125 rock art sites dating back some 10 000 years, giving the enchanted visitor an opportunity to contemplate the daily detail ofa now extinct existence and be humbled by its beauty and simplicity. Providing a rich cultural history, this pristine collection of San art communicates the very real spiritual reality of these true conservationists and will inspire and invigorate the observer.

When the sun sets, sundowners are served at one of the many dramatic vantage points that the reserve has to offer, while at night, the traveler can marvel at skies which are a brilliant kaleidoscope of an unfolding universe.

Those who know their natural and homeopathic remedies, will be happy to hear that this region is home to both Rooibos and Buchu tea - wild plants which are now cultivated commercially in the valleys of the Cedarberg.
