Gateway to the Okavango regions
THE gateway to the wondrous wildlife areas of Botswana is the village of Maun on the banks of the Okavango Delta. With its busy airfield, Maun provides easy access to the big game areas of Okavango, Moremi Reserve, Linyanti Swamp and Chobe National Park, and southwards to the Makgadigadi and Central Kalahari National Parks.

Scheduled and charter flights arrive in Maun from Johannesburg, Victoria Falls and Windhoek, while Kasane in Botswana's north east is also linked by air to this bustling little delta town. From here, the traveler is transported by road or air charters to the many private lodges and camps in the region. If one overnights in Maun, the visitor can enjoy a night safari on the waterways, where guides use torches and lights to show the varied fish life or the reflective red and green eyes of animals prowling the banks.
Although most travelers merely pass through Maun en route to or from their safari destination, the town has a frontier-like feel and a fair dollop of hospitality, so if the visitor overnights here, one is assured of comfort and adventure.
