Chumbe Island Location

Zanzibar is an archipelago off the southern coast of Tanzania. The island is reached by a short flight or a ferry ride from Dar es Salaam. Morning boat transfers to Chumbe Island from Mbweni Beach, Stone Town, are included in the price of accommodation.

This protected area has a famous coral garden, which has been protected and preserved. There are over 200 species of coral and 400 species of fish, making it a snorkeller's paradise. Scuba diving is prohibited on the island itself, but excursions to great diving locations nearby can be arranged. The Forest reserve is also a great place to visit, with guided walks available to see the unique flora and fauna which are attracted to this coral rag forest. A lighthouse and mosque built in colonial times are also located on the island, offering an insight into history and impressive architecture.

There are only seven bungalows on the island, ensuring privacy and personal service. Each has a view of the sea and is a short distance from the ocean. They are all stylishly decorated and equipped with ensuite bathroom and living room as well as a spacious bedroom. The bungalows are designed in such a way that all the facilities are gentle on the local environment, with no impact on the coral reef. The restaurant also overlooks the sea and serves fresh food (specialising in the famous local seafood) with Arabic, African and international influences - and of course, famous Zanzibar spices.
