The parent
should also consider the child's temperament and disposition
to travel. If you know that a kid raises hell when
deprived of video games or other modern stimuli, then
it might provide a clue as to whether a child is a
likely safari enthusiast. If "The Jungle Book" or
"Tarzan" is or was one of your child's favorite videos,
then the chances are good that they would thoroughly
enjoy Africa. Likewise if they are not scared of insects
or bugs, or if they enjoy exploring and discovery
in nature.
A safari can be a truly exhilarating experience for
both young and old, with plenty of adventure, excitement
and new experiences around every bush. So make a child's
travelling as comfortable as possible - pack the right
clothes, use sun protection creams and sprays and
ointments to repel insects.
Give them their
own camera or pair of binoculars, a bird or animal
book or checklist to mark off all the wonderful sightings.
Show them the little things that help make the bush
so fascinating - like the dung beetle rolling dung
to its nest; or the "tok-tokkie" bug tapping out a
message on the ground to lure a mate.
Above all,
treat your children as important traveling companions,
and not as an unwanted appendage. Africa is a great
leveler and a place which brings us all "down to earth".
The wildlife havens are sanctuaries where the greatest
and smallest among us feel a sense of the holy and
divine. It is a place of awakening and education,
of understanding and comprehending, of growing a little
taller in ourselves.
