Makalali does not border Kruger Park, but the park is nevertheless large enough for an excellent wildlife experience and is well stocked with animals. It is typical bushveld terrain with acacia thorn trees, low bush and grassland and is a wonderful introduction to Africa. A great option for honeymooners is to spend the first couple of nights in Makalali at romantic Garonga Safari Camp, before heading into the wilder Sabi Sand reserve for another 3 nights.

Makalali can be accessed either by road or by air charter onto the airstrip. There are also scheduled flights from Johannesburg to either Hoedspruit or Phalaborwa, where car rental is available or you can be collected by the lodge. Beside Garonga, another wonderful accommodation in this region is Umhlametsi Kwenga Lodge.
